What is the single best Team Effectiveness tool? I’ll tell you.
As a Project Manager, you want the best from your team. But your time is limited, and you have so much to do. So, you need to be focused. What is the best way to get the most from your team?
This video is safe for viewing in the workplace.
This is learning, so, sit back and enjoy
Team Leadership has Four Priorities
Put simply, good team leadership needs to focus on four essentials:
- The Individuals in your team
- The Plan you want to follow, and getting it done
- A sense of Team spirit
- High-quality communications
So, which one of these gives the most for team effectiveness?
For my money, it’s the first. Because a team is, above all, made up of individuals. And, if you don’t cultivate your relationship with each, you have no leadership.
A Team Effectiveness Challenge
For new project managers and team leaders, this can be a difficult priority. Setting aside time for one-on-one meetings is a challenge, but conducting them feels even harder. The simple advice is that practice will make it feel easier. And you’ll get better at it too.
So, do it. A one-on-one can:
- Say ‘I care’
- Learn about each other
- Clarify expectations
- Assess performance
- Give guidance
A Question
Your purpose in one-to-ones with your staff is to help them perform better in the short and long term.
So, one question should always figure in your session:
‘What can I do to help you?’
A Commitment
No meeting is complete without a follow-up. At the end of the one-to-one, summarise and close, but also ask for and make commitments. And send a short, simple email. Follow-up with the one or two key points from the meeting and re-state any commitments you or they make.
You can make one-on-one meetings your source of project advantage.

What Kit does a Project Manager Need?
I asked Project Managers in a couple of forums what material things you need to have, to do your job as a Project Manager. They responded magnificently. I compiled their answers into a Kit list. I added my own.
