Project Team Leadership: 5 Tips for Leading Your Project Team | Video

As soon as you get your own project team to lead, you will need to develop the craft of project team leadership. So, in this video, I share five of my best tips.

Five Tips

Tip 1: Direction

At the outset, your team needs clear direction. As they mature, let them direct themselves.

Tip 2: Support

Support relationship building when it’s needed. Then get out of the way.

Tip 3: Your Demeanor

Never under-estimate the impact that your demeanour will have on your team.

Tip 4: Motivation

Intrinsic Motivation trumps Extrinsic Motivation. To motivate your team, give them:

1. Clear purpose
2. Autonomy to make choices
3. Opportunity to develop mastery of what they are doing
4. An environment of respect
5. Recognition for their contributions
6. A chance to build strong relationships

Tip 5: Feedback

Give team members feedback on their performance. Do it to give them a BOOST. Make your feedback:

• Balanced – between criticism and confirmation
• Observed – based on evidence
• Objective – about the behavior: not the person
• Specific – enough for them to take targeted action
• Timely – so they can still recall what they did
