I was managing one large project for a client in central London, working for the consulting firm Deloitte.

One day, my boss asked me:

‘Mike, what are we paying you for? Every time I see you, you’re sitting on that sofa, chatting to one of the Managers, and drinking coffee.’

‘Well’, I said, ‘that is what you are paying me for.’

Here’s the thing…

The hardest part of a project is defining it well. That’s why we created our Project Manager’s Project Definition Kit.

The next hardest part, once you’ve done that, is to put together a robust plan.

So, now you’ve done the hard part, your job as a project manager is to sit back and watch your team deliver against the plan. Easy.

Well, maybe not.

Project Delivery: Monitor and Control

You also have to meet your team leaders frequently, to check on progress, and help them solve problems and deal with issues. This is monitoring and controlling. The ‘Monitor and Control Loop’ is the beating heart of your project. Monitor what’s going on, apply a tweak or correction, and then monitor what’s changed.

By the way, the delivery stage is also commonly known as the delivery phase, and also as:

• Execution stage or execution phase
• Implementation stage or implementation phase

There’s plenty more to do… At the core of the Project Delivery Stage is the Monitor and Control Loop. But there’s more besides.
