James Louttit

James Louttit is a passionate advocate for delivering projects with impact rather than effort.

Throughout his career, he’s learned everything he can about the art of project management, and has developed his passion for helping people deal with real-world issues.

This has led him to refine his understanding into highly practical tips, techniques, and approaches that he now teaches to PMs of all levels of experience around the world. James was awarded the PMI Ireland ‘Project Professional of the Year Award’ in 2023.

Now, his new book ‘Leading Impactful Teams’ is winning plaudits from readers for its practical, easy-to-understand advice, illustrations, and stories.

That’s why I wanted to speak with James about Managing Projects in the Real World

Conversation with James Louttit

We discuss:

  1. James’ experience when he let project work take over, to the detriment of his health, and how that led to some of the advice he offers Project Managers.
  2. On page 27, of ‘Leading Impactful Teams’, I made a note, saying ‘strong section on facilitation. James Louttit’s ‘SAVE’ approach for getting the best possible spread of ideas is excellent and similar to my own approach. We talk about why it’s important and how it works.
  3. James and I also share a similar approach to thinking about contingency – whether schedule or budget. How does James believe we should be thinking about this?
  4. We also both like planning poker. And James makes an excellent point about what estimation is really all about.
  5. Project Benefits is a hot topic for me and it is at the heart of James’ approach to project prioritization. And he has a memorable way to illustrate the principle. So, what’s his point of view on prioritization?
  6. Finally, I like James’ description of information refrigerators and information radiators. What’s that about?

What Kit does a Project Manager Need?

I asked Project Managers in a couple of forums what material things you need to have, to do your job as a Project Manager. They responded magnificently. I compiled their answers into a Kit list. I added my own.
