I don’t know anyone who knows more about Project Risk Management than Glen Alleman. So, when he wrote his first book on the subject, I had to speak with him and share it with you.
This video is safe for viewing in the workplace.
This is learning, so, sit back and enjoy
Project Risk Management
In this conversation, Glen Alleman and I discuss:
- I like that Glen spends a lot of pages ensuring readers understand the fundamental ideas that underpin risk management. One of the key ideas he discusses is the distinction between aleatory, epistemic, and ontological risks. These are unfamiliar words, so can you explain them in simple terms and tell us why the distinctions are important?
My own video on these risk types is 4 Types of Project Risk – Different Forms of Uncertainty | Video - At the heart of Glen’s approach to risk management is what he calls the Risk Handling Plan. What is this, and how do project professionals create one?
- I think where Glen’s book really stands out from other books at the same or a similar level – including my own – is in the excellent chapter on Risk Tracking. What advice would Glen give to a project manager who wants to elevate this part of the project management practice?
Glen Alleman
I think of Glen Alleman as the project manager’s project manager. He has such a depth of experience – particularly in large scale complex projects in the government and defense sectors – that he is someone I am constantly learning from.
He is outspoken on many aspects of our profession but, unlike so many voices, he is astonishingly well-read and thoughtful. His rigorous approach shows the profession at its best.
His book Performance Based Project Management is one of the best mid-teir project management books, so I was excited when he turned to risk management for his second book, which he wrote with co-author Jon Quigley.
It combines Glen’s characteristic rigor with brilliant clarity.
