Competency and Technical Project Management skills are not enough to be a Great Project Manager

You must focus on two things to get there:

1. Keeping learning
2. People skills

I made a long list if everything a good PM needs to develop. But when I went looking for greatness, three things kept coming to the top of my list:

1. Self-control

• Stay calm in face of adversity
• Keep your temper
• Maintain your optimism, enthusiasm, and confidence
• Determination to succeed (grit) and motivation to keep going
• Resilience to get up again when you fall

2. Generosity of Spirit

• Helping, teaching, coaching the people around you
• Listening to team members and stakeholders
• Caring for your team and putting them first (Check out Simon Sinek’s book: Leaders Eat Last – affiliated)
• Servant Leadership

3. Curiosity

• Insatiable desire to learn and to know more
• Always-on sense of wonder about what’s new
• Never settle for OK
• Observant
• Critical thinking – challenging orthodoxy, willingness to see the other side of any argument or decision
• Preparedness to speak out against the majority view
